Discover the rich tapestry of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes that define Northwestern China’s storied past.
Urumqi – Gateway to Silk Road & the Heart of Eurasia
Upon arrival in Urumqi, you’ll feel the unique blend of cultures that make this city a microcosm of the Silk Road’s historical diversity. Spend your first day acclimating to the local atmosphere, savoring Uyghur delicacies, and exploring bazaars that brim with vibrant textiles and spices. Later, take a leisure stroll around the serene Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), nestled high in the Tianshan Mountains, offering a tranquil escape and stunning views.
Turpan – The Oasis in the Desert
A short drive brings you to Turpan, a lush oasis amidst the arid landscape. Discover the ancient city of Jiaohe, carved out of a plateau, and marvel at the sophisticated Karez irrigation system – a testament to the ingenuity of ancient peoples in one of the driest places on Earth. Witness the fiery red Flaming Mountains, which seem ablaze under the sun’s intense heat. Afterward, cool off in the Grape Valley, an idyllic retreat known for its fruit-laden vineyards and refreshing wines – a sweet respite in the desert heat.
Dunhuang – Echoes of Buddhist Art
Travel to Dunhuang, a historic crossroads on the Silk Road. Here, you’ll encounter the Mogao Caves, a complex of 492 grottoes adorned with Buddhist murals and statues that have withstood time. The artistry and spiritual legacy within these caves will leave you in awe. Experience the natural wonders of Mingsha Shan (Singing Sand Dunes) and Crescent Moon Spring. The dunes are known for the musical sounds they produce when the wind blows. Enjoy a camel ride or simply climb to the top for a panoramic sunset view.
Jiayuguan – the Western End of the Great Wall
Our next stop is Jiayuguan, home to the westernmost fort of the Great Wall of China. Explore this imposing structure that once guarded the frontier and marked the edge of civilization. Walk along its ramparts and imagine being a sentinel overlooking the vast Gobi Desert.
Zhangye & Lanzhou – Rainbow Mountains & the Ancient Wonder of Bingling Grottoes
Prepare to be mesmerized by Danxia Landform Geological Park in Zhangye for its multicolored “Rainbow Mountains.” Accessing the Bingling Grottoes is part of the adventure, typically take a boat to navigate the Liujiaxia Reservoir and the surrounding landscape before arriving at the grottoes. Nestled along the cliffs of the Yellow River, it can be dated back to the Western Qin dynasty around 420 AD.
