Losar, which means “New Year” in the Tibetan language, is the most popular and important festival in Tibet. All Tibetans will come back home for family reunions.

Losar is as important as Christmas in Western countries. It celebrates for 15 days, starting from the first to the 15th day of the first month in the Tibetan Calendar. The preparations for the New Year generally begin in the last month of the previous year. Apart from buying New Year’s supplies, households prepare a “Chemar” grain bucket filled with fried wheat and ghee, along with soaked barley seeds, which are then placed on the Buddhist altar to symbolize hopes for a prosperous harvest in the coming year.
