Cycling from Lhasa, Tibet to Shangri-la, Yunnan involves part of the national highway G318 from Sichuan to Tibet.
Although the tour is not easy, the cycling route abounds with stunning natural scenery, not only plateaus but also meadows, not only snow mountains but also forests, not only grand canyons but also high mountains, which will accompany you all the way, is a feast for your eyes. If there’s fate, you may see groups of pilgrims from nomadic areas praying and doing body-length kowtow towards their holy land – Lhasa. But why should we cycle from Lhasa, Tibet to Shangri-la, Yunnan, not reverse from Yunnan to Tibet? Starting from Lhasa, you’ll go downhill all the way, which will lower the difficulty of the ride significantly but the same route covers both part of Sichuan-Tibet Highway and part of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway and the same extraordinarily attractive scenery. Meanwhile, part of driving combined with part of cycling can help you avoid altitude sickness. You’ll have different experiences to travel on the highway both by vehicle and by bike perfectly combined.
Starting in Lhasa, you’ll pedal through the ancient streets, surrounded by towering monasteries and vibrant markets. As you leave the city behind, the path takes you through rural Tibet, where traditional villages and nomadic herders dot the landscape. Ascending through high mountain passes, you’ll experience the rugged beauty of the Tibetan Plateau. As the journey progresses, you’ll cross into Yunnan Province, where the scenery changes dramatically. Descending through lush valleys and dense forests, you’ll ride through terraced fields and quaint villages. Along the way, you’ll immerse yourself in the unique cultures and traditions of both Tibet and Yunnan, forging a deeper connection with the land and its people. Cycling into Shangri-La, you’ll be captivated by the town’s ethereal beauty, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and misty landscapes. Explore the ancient Tibetan monasteries and immerse yourself in the warm hospitality of the locals, all while reflecting on the incredible journey that brought you to this enchanting destination.
Here, each monastery, village, and trail is a testament to the unyielding allure of West China, a region where every stone, stream, and pathway is a silent custodian of ancient tales and timeless beauty.
