Drigung Thil is the central temple of Drikung Kagyu, located near River Xuerong in County Maizhokunggar, which is in the east of Lhasa. The temple was built by Barenqenbai in 1,179 AD.
Standing in the mountains and cliffs, Drigung Thil looks very spectacular. Deep in the mountain stream, Terdrom temple is a famous Buddhist site. There is abundant spring water with moderate heat which can cure diseases. The spring enjoys a high reputation in history and attracts many tourists.
The platform for sky-burial in this temple is the most famous one. There are two famous sky-burial sites in the world, one is in India, and the other one is here. The hill on the back of the temple is Tancheng. It is said that one’s soul could fly to heaven instead of hell if he was prayed for by Tulku. That’s why many people send their relatives who were dead for sky-burial here.
