Lake Mansarovar is considered sacred as Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati are believed to have a bath in his lake. The lake washes away your sins if you believe in the powers of holy water of the sacred lake. The best time to bathe is between 3-5 am as it is the time of gods. It is said a dip in Lake Mansarovar at the night of new moon washes away the sins of current and past 100 lives. In Tibetan language, Saga means ‘the fourth’ and Dawa means ‘month’. So the whole month of the fourth lunar month is a religious month throughout Tibet, especially the 15th day of the fourth lunar month (full moon) makes the date of Sakyamuni’s birth, attaining Nirvana (enlightenment), stepping into Parinirvana. This year, Saga Dawa is celebrated on May 23 (Full Moon Day) 2024 based on the Gregorian Calendar.

Monks visit Kailash Mansarovar and offer prayers to the holy mountain and also complete Kora Parikrama around full moon night which is considered very auspicious also known as “MONTH OF MERITS” in Tibetan and Buddhism religions.

In Lhasa, a large number of pilgrims gather at Jokhang temple and Barkhor circuit. Many Tibetans won’t eat any meat for the whole month. People climb Gephel Ri, the peak behind Drepung monastery, to burn juniper incense. During that whole month, local Tibetans are very active in doing pilgrimage and worshiping every holy place.

FULL MOON NIGHT has deep significance at the “Shiv Bhoomi”. If you happen to be there at Kailash Mansarovar region or near Lake Mansarovar then you may witness Children of the Moon coming down via mountain slopes to Earth. Lord Shiva and goddess “Parvati” are believed to have baths in this Lake. In the morning around 4 am on a full moon night at a special point around Lake Mansarovar, many pilgrims believed to have visually seen the god and Goddess taking a holy dip and holy water getting dispersed just like when a human takes a holy dip and bathes in the lake and a “splash” is generated.
