Surrounded by a high wall, the temple lies on the hillside of Mount Niseri and is the palace for Panchen IV and later generations of Panchen. The Tashilhunpo Festival is a time of great religious significance and devotion for Tibetan Buddhists. It usually draws pilgrims and tourists from various parts of the world who come to witness the unveiling of the Buddha thangka. The thangka is displayed for a limited period, after which it is carefully rolled up and stored until the next year’s festival.
