Manasarovar is considered to be the holiest lake in the world by Hindus and Buddhists. It represents the wisdom aspect of enlightenment. For thousands of years, pilgrims have traveled here to complete a Kora around the lake.
As the pilgrims said, a quick dip in the lake would wash away the sins of a lifetime though the water is chilly. Simply walk along the lakeshore in a clockwise direction unless you have an affinity to the Bonism which requires you to walk in a counter-clockwise direction.
Lake Manasarovar is located in the Ngari Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region, China, near the border with Nepal and India. It’s situated at a high altitude of about 4,590 meters (15,060 feet) above sea level.
Kora around the lake is a very memorable experience in that you can see snow mountains of the Himalayan range, praying flags, and many Indian and Tibetan pilgrims, besides the clear blue water of the lake Mansarovar itself. The best views are from the hilltop monasteries of Gossul and Chiu Monasteries.
We’d better hike along the rocky shore to avoid sinking in the swamp. Be careful of the Tibetan mastiffs which are extremely territorial dogs in Tibet. Be prepared for all kinds of weather. The terrain is very exposed and windy. Trekking altitude is above 4,000m, so it’s necessary to hire yaks or porters to help you carry your luggage. The best time to do the kora is May, June & September when the weather is more stable and warmer than other seasons.
